Pianist Janina Fialkowska has enchanted audiences and critics around the world for more than 40 years — legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein described her as a “born Chopin interpreter.” Her performance of Frédéric Chopin’s expressive Piano Concerto No. 2 headlines this concert, which also features Polish composer Witold Lutosławski’s Symphonic Variations and Symphony No. 4.

In Sergei Prokofiev’s imaginative classic, Peter and his animal friends try to capture a wolf lurking near the village. A delightful introduction to the orchestra, the instruments are characters in this narrated story. Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and Barbara Assiginaak’s Innenohr/Biinjii`ii Tawgaang (a Calgary Phil commission) round out this program.

Invitcus, the famous poem by WIlliam Heanley, is about the human spirit and our ability to thrive, endure hardship, and face challenges with bravado and determination. This concert is intended to celebrate the resilience of all those people who worked so hard to pull us through the many challenges faced by the pandemic. While a celebration of that resilience, it is also a reflection on the challenges we have faced and the impact it has had and continues to have on us all.

Presented by Springboard Performance and New Works Calgary, "Graveyards and Gardens" is a collaborative performance installation conceived, created, and performed by composer Caroline Shaw and choreographer Vanessa Goodman with lighting design by James Proudfoot and audio design by Eric Chad and Kate De Lorme. Co-produced by Shaw and Goodman, this new work examines memory as a process of reconstruction rather than an exact recall of fixed events, embracing the various elaborations, distortions, and omissions.

Canadian icon Joni Mitchell has been winning fans with her blend of blues, rock, and jazz since she started singing in small clubs in Saskatchewan in the 1960s. She has been called “one of the greatest songwriters ever” by Rolling Stone. At this concert, Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Slean lends her own incredible voice to the best of Mitchell’s songbook, complete with the rich sound of a full orchestra.

Are You Gone? – the first new album in a decade from Sarah Harmer – is a deeply personal and momentous collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of climate crisis, and the question of loss. The first song “New Low” is more than a return to music for the internationally celebrated singer-songwriter and activist: it is a definition of form, a call - for - uprising in the face of global disaster, at the most critical moment for Harmer to raise her voice – one of the most distinctive in Canadian music.

The vitality of "New Low," its heedless pace, sharp guitars and exclamatory horns, bely the passage of time since Harmer’s last record, Oh Little Fire (2010). Nearly twenty years from the release of her debut, You Were Here (2000), Are You Gone brings a close to Harmer's period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement, rich in detail and emotion, from the heart and for the spirit. The multi-award-winning platinum-selling musician's long-anticipated sixth album will be released February 2020 on Arts & Crafts.

Under the direction of celebrated artists Michelle Thrush and Sandi Somers, Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society brings together seven artists to immerse themselves in theatre creation techniques inspired by the land we call Calgary.

Together, they wrote, listened, danced and created under the guidance of a cadre of veteran artists and Treaty 7 Knowledge Keepers to create this collage of short films.  

These artists speak from the heart to the land we live on.

Ten women, from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, India, Iran, Syria, Mexico, China, Nigeria, and the Philippines will share their stories of immigration and adaptation to Canada – through a pair of shoes.

Experience the power of Jean Sibelius’s fifth symphony, with its soaring horns and famous finale. This is paired with Richard Strauss’s virtuosic Oboe Concerto performed by Principal Oboist Alex Klein — a work that won him a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Solo with Orchestra. The concert begins with American composer George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, an emotional work dedicated to his grandmother.

Artistic director and choreographer Wen Wei Wang dedicates his new work to his late mother, Ying Yun, who had a significant influence on him becoming an artist. Wang engages a group of exceptional dancers to interpret her story, whilst sharing their own intersectional experiences. The work features remixes of Bach compositions with an electroacoustic score.
